If you are suffering from hypertension, you likely know about DASH. It seems to be extremely effective in reducing blood pressure and hypertension http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/hbp/dash/new_dash.pdf (give up all refined carbohydrates and minimize salt) - and Dr. Mirkin who is a fabulous and famous physician http://drmirkin.com/archive/6708.html - he has a whole section on heart. If you are not genetically predisposed to high blood pressure, then diet and exercise combined with a calming meditation practice should work wonders. Pills that befuddle you will drive you nuts after awhile.

Hi Katherine, I never know how to find you to reply to you. Unfortunately what we're dealing with does seem to be a genetic predisposition. We've tried diet, excercise, regular and very strict yoga... It made zero difference at all. I lost ten pounds, and kept it down but that's about it. I gave up pasta, bread, using salt in my food a very long time ago -- and the cardio machine has been my best friend for a long time. And the pills are already driving me nuts...

Better to live life forever than to burn out and leave the ones who love you behind.

Ah, sorry to hear that about the genes, but then again, when science attributes a condition to genetics we're inclined to throw up our hands and think we have no autonomy or independence. We're still unique individuals. My doc put me on thyroid hormone because my TSH is chronically low-normal. This appears to be a genetic condition but no one can say for sure. There are as many reasons for it not being genetic that I can think of that have to do with my personality and my life experiences. I took myself off the pills (not suggesting you do that) because I felt horrible on the drug and more or less fine without it. This "low-normal" thyroid may "plague" me all my life but I am beginning to think that maybe I'm meant to have a heart with 53 beats a minute and not 60 or 70 or 80. Maybe that's the way I'm constructed and there's nothing wrong with it. It feels like my heart is racing on the hormone; if that's normal, I can't be normal. And then I read an expert on thyroid talk about how estrogen levels, stress and certain foods affect thyroid performance so I'm trying different non-chemical things. I hope they can get the drugs to where you don't feel their effect and you just feel right like baby bear. And keeping a journal is a good idea because you may be able to link events and reactions to events to how you feel... and the stresses of your job and expectations of self etc. But I hope you feel better asap.
